Introduction / History

The Napu people live primarily in the Napu Valley, located in the North Lore District of Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi. Their language, Napu, is part of the Austronesian family and belongs to the Kaili-Pamona subgroup.

Historically, the Napu were known as fierce warriors in the late 19th century, often engaging in raids and conflicts with neighboring groups. They were part of the Lore cultural sphere, which included other highland peoples such as Bada and Behoa. Oral traditions and ancestral customs have shaped their identity for generations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today, while modern influences have reached the valley, the Napu maintain a strong sense of cultural heritage rooted in their language and traditions. The Napu live in a fertile valley surrounded by forested mountains and prairie lands. Most families work as farmers, cultivating rice and other crops in the valley's fields. Livestock raising and small-scale trade supplement their income. Homes are typically made of wood and bamboo, and villages are organized around extended family networks. Community life is cooperative, with elders playing a central role in decision-making. Celebrations often include traditional dances, music, and feasts during harvest seasons or weddings. Meals are based on rice, vegetables, and occasionally meat, reflecting the agricultural lifestyle of the region.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Napu people have been influenced by Christianity, particularly Protestant traditions introduced through missionary work. Churches exist in the valley, and Christian practices are part of community life for many. However, traditional animistic beliefs are still prevalent, especially in remote areas, where rituals connected to nature and ancestral spirits remain significant. While many identify as Christian, there is a need for deeper understanding of the nature of Christ that transforms families and communities.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to healthcare and education is limited, leaving many vulnerable to illness and illiteracy. Economic opportunities are scarce, and farming families often struggle with outdated techniques and lack of resources.

Spiritually, the Napu need strong biblical teaching and discipleship to help believers grow in faith and live out the gospel in daily life. Resources such as Scripture in the Napu language, audio recordings, and teaching materials are essential for spiritual growth. There is also a need for leadership development so that local believers can guide their communities and participate in global missions.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Napu people to experience a deep understanding of God's word and for their faith to influence every aspect of life.
Ask God to raise up local leaders who can disciple others to disciple even more people.
Pray for physical needs such as improved healthcare, clean water, and educational opportunities for children.
Intercede for the completion of Bible translation and the creation of gospel resources in the Napu language.
Pray that those who already follow Christ will be mobilized to share the good news with neighboring groups and become active participants in the great commission.
